Dad gained his computer science training at the Moore Institute of Engineering, University of Pennsylvania.
This was followed by over thirty-three years experience in the North American computer and communications industries.
During his career, dad was involved in all facets of Operations, Programming, Systems Programming, Technical and Management Training, Applications Development and Design, Management Feasibility Studies and Proposals, Technical Management, Project Management and Sales and Marketing. He was a guest speaker to colleges, governments and associations such as the Canadian Information Processing Society and the Data Processing Management Association. Dad had a strong interest in the future technological trends in the industry and their impact on society. His peers knew him as a visionary who accurately foresaw trends a decade or more ahead of time. Dad was a prolific ideas man. During his career working for major computer manufacturers, Dad: Produced the first commercial COBOL compiler in the world (USDoD [United Stated Department of Defense]COBOL 1961). The late Radm Grace Hopper USN (ret), was in charge of this project. Developed a student, teacher, and classroom scheduling system for the Ontario Board of Education. Taught over 550 Bell Canada staff in the principles of Systems Analysis, Database Design, and Programming. Developed and implemented an Introductory Computer Language (ICL) compiler that was used by several Ontario high schools and Lasalle University to teach basic programming concepts. Produced a fault tolerant, worldwide, store and forward message switching system for COTC - now Teleglobe Canada. It switched all North American teletype messages to/from Europe. Conceived, project managed, and implemented a telecommunications technique for Bell Canada to link two mainframes, located 400 miles apart, using multiple 50KB lines and virtual circuit, packet switching concepts. This permitted automatic Program load sharing and File sharing without operations staff being necessarily aware of its occurrence. NASA and Shell Mex (Texas) later acquired the software to connect remote mainframes. Designed and built his own personal computer system in 1975. Taught the basics of microprocessor hardware and software design. He had a strong technical involvement with PC based products and systems including advanced wireless packet networking solutions. Specialized in Distributed Data Base Systems, Wide Area Networking and Local Area Networking techniques, during the late 70's and early 80's. Consulted on high volume, on-line airline reservation and cargo control systems to Continental, Western, and Hughes Airwest airlines. These large scale, real-time, fault tolerant, multiprocessor systems each supported over 400 transactions per second and serviced 3000 plus users worldwide. Successfully grew a minicomputer based office automation business from $ 3M to over $ 16M annually in two years, as Director of Marketing - Office and Networking Systems with Honeywell Bull. During this period he was also a member of the company's world wide product marketing planning committee and was involved with ISO standards in Office Automation, EDI, and Networking. Became Director of Professional Services and subsequently was promoted to Vice President of Software Development at Westbridge Computer Company (now ISM - Information Systems Management Corporation, Regina) in the late 80's. Founded Alliance Systems Technology Inc. in May 1991, a professional services organization specializing in providing prime contracting management services, project management, business and product marketing, strategic and tactical planning, and information technology consulting services. Performed a highly detailed analysis of current and future needs for medical facilities in Fall 1992. The emphasis was placed on the rapidly developing demand for PC based network computing systems focused on client/server, imaging, document management, and workflow systems to integrate with future Health Information Networks. Founded CMSL in July 1993 after completing the extensive design work for CMS. This was dad's last major project before ill health sadly forced his very premature retirement. |
